Wilderness First Aid Training

A 16-hour BSA Wilderness First Aid Course will be presented on October 17 & 18, 2020 at Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation. Lunch and snacks will be provided. Breakfast and dinner will not be provided.

For those that wish to camp, a campsite will be available Friday and Saturday evening, or you may commute to camp by 8:30 am each morning.

Time is the major element distinguishing Wilderness First Aid (WFA) from Standard First Aid.  When calling 911 is not an immediate option, or when help is hours or even days away, the task of treating the ill or injured can challenge your “standard” first aid skills.  Heat, cold, rain, wind, darkness, distance over land or water may separate you from definitive care and evacuation may also need to be improvised from what is available. Communication with the “outside world” may be limited or unavailable.  All of these things may very well be part of the WFA world.

The course is for those who plan trips to remote areas far from “normal” EMS Services, providing hands-on skills practice for the remote site.

Wilderness First Aid is required at each BSA high adventure location. Check the specific locations for specific requirements and exceptions.

Must be a registered Scouter or Scout over the age of 14, and currently certified in CPR.

The fee for the course is $125 per person. This fee covers the meals as stated, materials and a WFA course book. Upon completion of the course, each participant will receive a card good for two years.

The course syllabus is provided through the Emergency Care & Safety Institute (ECSI).

More details on Wilderness First Aid can be found at scouting.org.

Den Chief Training

A Den Chief is a Scout, Venturer or Sea Scout assisting a Cub Scout den. This training is designed to build on each of these ideas using a framework that will allow the new Den Chief, or perhaps the experienced Den Chief looking for new ideas, to have fun and learn the role.

More details on this training (time and location) to come.

It’s a monthly gathering for the District to get updates from BSA and Council, get training on various topics, get ideas for unique events and happenings, and for representatives from Packs, Troops and Crews to meet and share their ideas and perspectives.
